Work time increased: Now 10 hours of work will be required in companies and shops, new act implemented

Haryana Shops and Establishment Act: The BJP government in Haryana has amended the Shops and Commercial Establishments Act (1958). Following the new amendment, business hours in Haryana have been increased from nine to ten hours. Overtime for employees has also been increased.

Work time increased: Business hours in Haryana’s commercial establishments have been increased from nine to ten hours. Employees in companies and shops will now be required to work ten hours. The overtime limit has been increased from 115 hours to 144 hours. Appointment letters and identity cards will be required for large businesses and companies. The Cabinet meeting held on November 3rd amended the Shops and Commercial Establishments Act (1958), setting stricter standards for large business establishments.

Governor Prof. Ashim Ghosh has issued an ordinance regarding the amendments to the Haryana Shops and Commercial Establishments Act. This ordinance will be passed in the upcoming session of the Legislative Assembly. Following the amendments to the Act, employees in companies and shops will now be required to work ten hours.

144 Hours of Overtime

This new decision will help businesses expand their reach to new customers and increase their revenue. The amendment increases the overtime limit per quarter from 115 hours to 144 hours. All overtime work will now be voluntary. Compensation for overtime will be paid at double the normal wage rate, ensuring the protection of workers’ rights.

Two-Tiered Work from Home

It will now be mandatory to issue appointment letters and identity cards to all employees. Like Maharashtra, Haryana has also introduced a two-tiered framework. Registrations for companies employing up to 20 employees and units employing more than 20 employees will be done online. Fines of up to 10,000 rupees for violations. For first-time violations related to registration or documentation, a fine of 3,000 to 10,000 rupees will be imposed.

Fine for Breaking the Rules

If a company repeatedly violates the rules, a daily fine of 500 rupees per day can be imposed. Employees must work for six consecutive hours before being eligible for rest leave. Female workers will only be allowed to work on machinery where the necessary protective equipment is available.

The old prohibition under Section 27 of the Act, which prevented women and children from working near cotton machines, has been removed, as child labour is already prohibited under existing laws.
