Zero Balance Account: In today’s world, where banking has become essential, the hidden fees levied by banks are weighing heavily on the common man’s pocket. Hundreds of rupees are deducted from accounts every year in the name of hefty penalties for not maintaining an average monthly balance, SMS charges, and ATM maintenance. Sometimes, due to low balances, the account goes into negative territory due to the penalties. But now, you don’t need to fear these unnecessary expenses. You can open a 100% zero-balance account through the Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) account, with no lifetime minimum balance requirement. Today, we’ll learn how to open this account and who can open it.

The Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account (BSBDA) is essentially a ‘no-frills’ or zero-balance account. It’s specifically designed for those who can’t maintain a minimum balance. Until now, this facility was primarily available under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), under which over 566 million accounts have been opened. However, the RBI has now expanded it further as a general banking service.

Who can open a zero balance account?

Any Indian citizen can open this account. The age requirement is generally 18 years and above, although minors can also open this account under the supervision of their guardians. Valid KYC documents such as Aadhaar card and PAN card are mandatory. This account can be opened individually or jointly.

What facilities are available in a Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account?

The scope of facilities in this account has been significantly expanded as per the updated rules, effective April 1, 2026. There is no account opening fee, nor is there any minimum balance requirement. Customers can deposit any amount and any number of times per month, with no limit. Banks offer free cash withdrawals at least four times a month, including ATM withdrawals. Additionally, banks issue free ATM-cum-debit cards to customers, and there is no annual maintenance fee. Internet banking, mobile banking, a passbook, and a checkbook with at least 25 pages per year are also provided free of charge.

Can I use UPI with my Basic Savings Bank Deposit account?

Yes, this account supports UPI. There are no limits on digital transactions. While cash withdrawals are limited to four times a month, payments made through digital means like UPI, NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS are completely unlimited and free. This means that no matter how many times you scan a QR code or make online purchases throughout the day, the bank will not charge any fees.

What documents are required to open a Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account?

Opening a BSBDA account is very simple and can be done by visiting any public or private sector bank branch. The customer simply needs to fill out a simple application form and provide their Aadhaar card or other valid documents as proof of identity and address.

Can more than one Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account be opened?

An individual can only hold one BSBDA account with any one bank. The most important condition is that if you already have another regular savings account with that bank, you must close your old account within 30 days of opening a new zero-balance account. However, customers are permitted to convert their existing savings account into a BSBDA by submitting a written application or through mobile banking.
