Zoho launches Soundbox with payment hardware to take on GPay, Paytm, and PhonePe

Zoho’s POS devices will also have a print option, allowing customers to receive receipts instantly. Currently, POS systems from companies like Paytm and PhonePe are more popular in India.

The indigenous company Zoho is in the news these days. Recently, the company’s instant messaging app, Arattai, has become quite popular, and the government is also promoting it. Now, the company appears to be making major preparations for the hardware space.

Zoho has now started selling point-of-sale devices, or POS machines. These include integrated QR devices and sound boxes. Currently, Paytm and PhonePe’s POS devices are popular in India and are the most common payment options available in retail stores.

Launched under Zoho Payments, this POD device could pose a tough competition to Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay. The company’s smart POS device features a touchscreen interface and a built-in printer that instantly prints receipts.

Zoho’s payment terminal supports 4G, WiFi, and Bluetooth. Through this machine, merchants can accept payments using chip cards, UPI, and QR codes.

Zoho Payment’s CEO stated that this is a natural expansion for the company, which launched in 2024. While it was a software-based payment solution at the time, the company has since provided online payment support across devices.

Now, the company has also introduced hardware. Since Zoho has all the tools needed to manage small businesses, their support will also be available in the payment terminal. This means merchants will be able to access everything from real-time payment tracking to complete accounting in one place.

There’s also a unified dashboard for businesses, allowing retailers and merchants to easily access all information about payments and billing. Zoho is PCI DSS certified for advanced security.

Arattai is gaining popularity

WhatsApp is the most widely used instant messaging app in India. But now Zoho’s Arattai app, which is indigenous, has arrived. This app offers features like calling and meeting in addition to chatting.

Until now, Arattai hasn’t provided end-to-end encryption for chatting, but the company has announced that end-to-end encryption will be implemented soon.

It’s worth noting that end-to-end encryption is considered the gold standard for chat privacy and security. Once this encryption is implemented, no one will be able to access chat data on Arattai. The problem with chatting without encryption is that personal data can be accessed by hackers or the company itself.

WhatsApp has long had end-to-end encryption, which has been audited several times by independent security researchers. It will be interesting to see how the indigenous Arattai competes with WhatsApp.
