Our team investigated the matter and found that the RBI has indeed issued a directive to banks. However, there is no mention of discontinuing the Rs 500 note in this directive. The actual RBI directive is only that banks should increase the availability of Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes in their ATMs.

What is the purpose of RBI?
