India’s two largest IT and industrial hubs—Pune and Bengaluru—are now set to come even closer to each other. If you have ever traveled between these two cities by road, you know just how exhausting the journey can be due to heavy traffic and narrow routes. However, the government is now planning to construct an expressway that will not only cut your travel time in half but also script a new chapter in development.

The Pune-Bengaluru Greenfield Expressway—being developed under the Central Government’s ambitious Bharatmala Pariyojana—is now on the verge of receiving its final approval. According to officials, the project’s alignment is expected to receive the green signal within the next few weeks, following which the land acquisition process will commence. This expressway is one of 25 select greenfield corridors across India that are poised to revolutionize the country’s pace of connectivity.

A 15-Hour Journey Now Takes Just 7 Hours

Currently, traversing the distance between Pune and Bengaluru takes approximately 14 to 15 hours. Travelers face significant difficulties due to traffic congestion and the limitations of existing highways. However, this new expressway is set to prove itself as a game-changer. Once completed, you will be able to travel from Pune’s Outer Ring Road to Bengaluru’s Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) in a mere 7 hours—effectively cutting your travel time in half.

A 700-km Long, 8-Lane Route

This expressway will span approximately 700 kilometers and feature 6 to 8 lanes. It will be an ‘access-controlled’ highway, meaning vehicles will be able to travel along it at high speeds without any interruptions. The estimated cost for this entire project is pegged between ₹45,000 crore and ₹50,000 crore.

A Bright Future for These Cities

This expressway will pass through several cities across Maharashtra and Karnataka, thereby unlocking new avenues for development in these regions. New industries, warehouses, logistics parks, and business hubs will be developed along the expressway in Pune, Satara, Sangli, Belagavi, Vijayanagara, Davanagere, and Tumakuru, creating thousands of new employment opportunities for local residents.

New Momentum for Economic Growth

This corridor will serve as a lifeline—not only for travelers but also for the logistics sector. The movement of agricultural produce from Western Maharashtra and technology goods from Bengaluru will become faster and more cost-effective. This will directly benefit the economies of both states.
