Following the successful operation of the Namo Bharat train on the Delhi-Meerut route, the NCR is now set to receive another major gift. Work on the Rapid Rail Corridor between Delhi and Karnal is expected to begin soon.
The scope of fast and modern transportation in Delhi-NCR is continuously expanding. Following the successful operation of ‘Namo Bharat’ (Rapid Rail) on the Delhi-Meerut route, preparations to commence work on the Delhi-Karnal corridor have now also gained momentum. A significant highlight is that groundwork for this project has already begun—even before receiving final approval from the Union Cabinet—raising hopes that this route, too, will make commuting significantly easier for people in the near future.
A 136-Kilometer Elevated Corridor
The Rapid Rail corridor being constructed from Delhi to Karnal will span approximately 136 kilometers. The majority of this corridor will be elevated; this design minimizes issues related to land acquisition and allows for the expedited completion of construction work. The route will be developed alongside the National Highway, thereby further enhancing connectivity.
Momentum Gained Through Utility Shifting
To accelerate this project, the NCRTC has initiated the process of shifting essential utilities, such as electricity lines and water pipelines. Tenders were recently issued for the relocation of 33 kV and 11 kV power lines. Additionally, preparations are underway to relocate approximately 36 kilometers of sewer and water pipelines. This preliminary work serves as a clear indication that the project is now progressing rapidly.
Major Interchanges in Delhi
A key feature of the Delhi-Karnal route will be its major interchange stations. Originating from Sarai Kale Khan, this corridor will connect with the Delhi Metro at prominent locations such as Indraprastha and Kashmere Gate. Connectivity will also be provided with the bus terminal at Kashmere Gate. This will enable passengers to access train, metro, and bus facilities within a single integrated network.
Delhi-Karnal Route Prioritized
Initially, three routes were designated for the ‘Namo Bharat’ service: Delhi-Meerut, Delhi-Gurugram-SNB, and Delhi-Panipat. However, at the behest of the Haryana government, the Panipat route was extended up to Karnal. According to current reports, work on the Delhi-Karnal corridor may now commence ahead of the Delhi-Gurugram corridor.
What Will Be the Benefits?
The launch of this route will make travel between Delhi and Haryana significantly easier and faster. Daily commuters will find relief from traffic congestion, and travel time will be substantially reduced. Furthermore, this corridor is expected to boost development and attract investment to the surrounding regions.
