Aadhaar in Assam: Now in Assam, no person above the age of 18 will be able to get a new Aadhaar card i.e. for the first time. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma made a big announcement on Thursday (21) saying that as a precautionary measure to prevent illegal immigrants from acquiring Indian citizenship, persons above the age of 18 will not be able to get Aadhaar card for the first time in the state. He told reporters after the cabinet meeting that persons above the age of 18 will be given only one month to apply for Aadhaar card. Provided that Aadhaar card has not been made yet.

However, he said that tribals living in tea gardens, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe people above the age of 18 will be issued Aadhaar cards for the next one year. According to PTI, Sharma said, “The decision to ban the issuance of Aadhaar cards is being considered as part of efforts to ensure the authenticity of the identity of citizens. This move demonstrates the attention given by the government to address concerns related to possible infiltration from Bangladesh in the last one year.” The CM said, “The decision to ban the issuance of Aadhaar cards is being seen as part of efforts to ensure the authenticity of citizens’ identities. The move reflects the government’s focus on addressing concerns related to possible illegal infiltration from Bangladesh in the last one year.”

The new order will come into effect from October 1

The Chief Minister said that this order will come into effect from October 1. He said that members of Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Tea Garden communities will get an additional one year to apply for and obtain Aadhaar cards. After this time, Aadhaar cards will be issued to people above 18 years of age only in rare cases. New Aadhaar will be issued to them only after receiving reports from the District Police and Foreigners Tribunal.

This work will have to be done for new Aadhaar

The CM told ‘Indian Express’, “If a person is left out even after one year for any reason, he will have to apply to the concerned Deputy Commissioner. The Deputy Commissioner will consult all stakeholders, such as Superintendent of Police, Foreigners Tribunal and will be able to issue Aadhaar cards only in rarest of rare cases.” In July, Sharma had said that the Cabinet was considering a policy to make new Aadhaar cards for adults in the state, which will be issued only by the Deputy Commissioners.

According to the report, last year the Assam government had said in a statement that Aadhaar enrolment is more than the population in at least four districts of Assam. The CM had said that the number of Aadhaar card holders has exceeded the population in at least four districts.

“In Barpeta, 103.74% people have Aadhaar cards. In Dhubri, 103.48%, in Morigaon, 101.76% and in Nagaon, about 100.86% have got Aadhaar cards. This is a matter of concern as it shows that suspicious foreign nationals may have managed to obtain the cards,” he told the Economic Times.
