Air India Dreamliner: Tata Group-owned Air India has received its first “line-fit” Boeing 787-9 aircraft. This is also the first Dreamliner to join the airline’s fleet in more than eight years. In the aviation industry, “line-fit” refers to the installation of a device, system, or feature during the aircraft’s assembly process, rather than afterward.

Officials provided the information.

Air India took delivery of the Dreamliner on January 7th at Boeing’s Everett factory in Seattle, an official said on Thursday. The aircraft is expected to arrive in India in the next few days after inspection by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This is the first line-fit Dreamliner to be delivered by Air India since its privatization in January 2022.

Air India last received a line-fit Dreamliner in October 2017, when the airline was under government ownership. The official said this latest aircraft is its first wide-body aircraft and the 52nd of 220 Boeing aircraft ordered through 2023.

Air India Express has already received 51 narrow-body Boeing 737-8 aircraft, including its first line-fit aircraft, which was delivered in late December.

Airbus and Boeing Aircraft Orders

Following its acquisition by the Tata Group in January 2022, Air India ordered 350 Airbus and 220 Boeing aircraft. Six A350 aircraft from the Airbus order have already been inducted into Air India’s fleet. Air India already has 26 B787-8 and six B787-9 aircraft from Vistara.

Vistara has merged with Air India. The Air India Group currently has over 300 aircraft. Of these, 185 belong to Air India and the remaining to Air India Express. The official said that about a dozen older Dreamliner aircraft could return to service in a new form by 2026.
