App Blocked: The Indian government, while taking action against a major cyber fraud network, has blocked an app named Wingo and some Telegram channels associated with it. This action has been taken by the Cyber Crime Coordination Centre under the Home Ministry. According to reports, this app was not only defrauding people of their money but was also using their phones to send fraudulent SMS without the knowledge of the users. The Home Ministry has issued a warning regarding the Wingo app and said that this app used to trap people by luring them with the promise of easy money. If you too have installed this app on your phone, then remove it immediately.
How was the Wingo app deceiving?
According to reports, (REF.) the Wingo app asked people to complete small tasks to earn money in a short time. After downloading the app, users were asked to deposit money in the name of investment. The app used personal wallets for payments. As complaints against the app increased or large amounts were deposited, the app would suddenly shut down. User accounts were also blocked. In this way, it operated like a fraudulent scheme.
The app has also been accused of spying.
The Wingo app has been accused of fraud and spying. After being installed on a phone, it would obtain unnecessary permissions on people’s devices, such as contacts, gallery, and location. This gave the app access to personal data. This allowed the app to send fraudulent SMS messages to others from their phones without their knowledge. The government has taken action, geo-blocking its servers and removing over 50 YouTube videos, including four Telegram channels with 153,000 followers.
How to Keep Yourself Safe
The government has issued strict guidelines for Android users. It advises against downloading apps that guarantee any benefits. Furthermore, avoid apps that ask for permission to access your phone’s gallery or SMS. Never send money to an unknown UPI ID or share OTPs.
If, despite taking all precautions, you become a victim of fraud, immediately call the helpline number 1930 or file a complaint on the government portal. Heed government advisories and avoid installing suspicious apps on your phone.
