Cheque Clearance Rule Postponed: If you’re about to deposit a cheque at a bank and expect the money to arrive in your account within a few hours, this news is crucial. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has temporarily postponed a major change in cheque clearance. Yes, the “superfast” cheque clearance we were expecting from the New Year, January 3, 2026, has now been put on hold.

On Wednesday, the RBI clarified that banks need more time to improve their processes. Therefore, the old system will continue for now. But there’s no need to worry; the RBI has also made some important changes to the cheque deposit and confirmation times, which every bank customer should know.

What was that “3-hour” plan of Phase 2?

In fact, the RBI is preparing to make the entire cheque clearing process completely high-tech. This is called the cheque Truncation System (CTS). Under Phase 2, the rule was to be implemented: once you deposit a cheque at the bank counter, the bank will have only three hours to pass or fail (reject) it.

Imagine how easy it would be if your cheque could be processed in just three hours. If the bank doesn’t respond within three hours, the cheque would automatically be considered approved and the funds would be settled. However, banks haven’t yet reached this level of preparation, which is why the RBI has postponed this rule until further notice.

Phase 1 system will continue

Even though Phase 2 has been postponed, it doesn’t mean we’re back in the old days. The Phase 1 system, which began on October 4, 2025, will continue as before. In Phase 1, banks are required to photograph cheque and send their data digitally to the clearinghouse. Instead of waiting for long periods like the old batch system, banks process cheque as they are received.

What will the new timings be?

It’s important for you to know the changes the RBI has made to the window. From now on, the timings for presenting and confirming cheque will be as follows:

cheque Presentation: The timing for presenting cheque will now be from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Confirmation/Rejection: Banks can confirm or reject cheque between 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM for deficiencies.

This means that if you deposit a cheque by 3:00 PM, the bank will have until 7:00 PM to make a decision.

Why was the Phase 2 decision postponed?

The RBI says banks need more time to adapt to the new system. Processing cheque within three hours is a significant challenge. This will require banks to significantly increase their software and staff performance. If implemented without preparation, there would be a greater risk of customer cheque being rejected due to technical issues. Therefore, the RBI has given banks more time to complete their homework.
