Cyclone Ditwah is currently generating winds of 70–80 km per hour. While it is not considered a very severe storm, its slow speed and proximity to the coast could make it more dangerous. IMD chief M. Mahapatra said, “The wind speed is not very high, but standing crops could suffer significant damage.”

Cyclone Ditvaah continued to approach the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and South Andhra Pradesh on Saturday, prompting a red alert and extensive preparations across the region. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone was moving northward at a speed of about 5 kmph across the southwest Bay of Bengal and near the Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coast. Despite approaching the mainland, its intensity remained unchanged.

As of 11:30 pm on November 29, the storm was centered near 10.7°N latitude and 80.6°E longitude. At that time, it was located about 90 km northeast of Vedaranyam, 90 km east-southeast of Karaikal, 130 km north-northeast of Jaffna, 160 km south-southeast of Puducherry, and about 260 km south of Chennai. The IMD predicts that Ditvaah will move almost parallel to the northern Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast over the next 24 hours. It could reach within 50 km of the coast by Sunday morning and within 25 km by evening. The cyclone is expected to make landfall today, November 30.

Heavy Rain Warning in Several Districts

The IMD has issued a red alert for several parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. According to the weather department, very heavy rain accompanied by strong winds is expected in the coming hours. Puducherry-Karaikal, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, and Chengalpattu are the areas where the heaviest rainfall is expected. Rainfall has already intensified in the southern and delta districts of Tamil Nadu, and the situation could worsen as the cyclone approaches.

Cyclone Ditwah is currently generating winds of 70–80 kmph. While it is not considered a very severe storm, its slow speed and proximity to the coast could make it more dangerous. IMD chief M. Mahapatra said, “The wind speed is not very high, but standing crops could suffer significant damage. Low-lying areas are at risk of flooding. Sea levels could rise by about half a meter to one meter tonight.”

Extensive preparations to deal with the storm

The Tamil Nadu government has initiated extensive preparations in anticipation of the potential threat from Cyclone Ditwah. 28 disaster response teams have been deployed across the state, and 6,000 relief camps have been prepared in vulnerable districts. The government is continuously reviewing emergency plans, establishing safe shelters for people, and coordinating with local agencies to handle this second major weather hazard within a month. Given the current situation, five teams from the 6th Battalion of the NDRF, fully equipped with FWR and CSSR equipment, have been airlifted from Vadodara, Gujarat, to Chennai. These teams will be deployed for relief and rescue operations in Tamil Nadu.

153 people have died.

Cyclone Ditawah has caused massive devastation in neighboring Sri Lanka. Torrential rains earlier this week have claimed at least 153 lives, and nearly 200 are still missing. Meanwhile, precautionary measures have been intensified in Chennai and surrounding coastal areas. Chennai Airport canceled 54 flights on Saturday and announced 47 more for Sunday—including 36 domestic and 11 international flights. Officials have warned passengers that further flight changes may be made depending on the situation, so they should check with their airlines for updates. The Railways has also set up a special war room to monitor the cyclone’s impact. Teams will be immediately dispatched to repair tracks and infrastructure if needed.
