This morning, the Supreme Court directed the West Bengal government to pay dearness allowance (DAE) to its employees for the period from 2008 to 2019. The bench directed the state government to pay 25% of the DAE dues to its employees by March 6. PTI quoted the bench as saying, “Receiving dearness allowance is a legally enforceable right of the respondent employees of the State of West Bengal… The employees of the appellant State will be entitled to payment of the arrears in accordance with this judgment for the period 2008-2019.” The case began when some state government employees filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court seeking DAE at the same rate as central government employees and pending dues.
