Delhi Water Alert: Delhi residents may face water shortages for the next two days. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has issued an alert for water supply disruptions on January 9th and 10th.
Why is the water supply being disrupted?
According to the Delhi Jal Board, the annual flushing program is being carried out in the reservoirs under the Chandrawal Water Works. This is a regular maintenance process that cleans the reservoirs to maintain water quality. Consequently, water supply will be disrupted for two days in areas receiving water from the Hindu Rao Reservoir.
These areas will be affected:
On Friday and Saturday, residents of Chandni Chowk, Lahori Gate, Peeli Kothi, Kashmiri Gate, St. Stephen’s Hospital, Hindu Rao Hospital, Civil Lines, Naya Bazaar Booster Pumping Station, Naya Bans, Mori Gate, Tirath Ram Hospital, Rajpur Road, Bangla Road, and Sarai Phus areas may experience low or no water pressure. The Water Board has advised people to store water as per their need.
Interconnection work has also increased the problem
Water supply will be disrupted not only in the Chandrawal area but also in several other areas. A new 900 mm water pipeline is being connected at six different locations. This work may cause water shortages in Inderpuri, Todapur Village, Narayana Village and Vihar, Mansarovar Garden, Rajouri Garden, Kirti Nagar, Punjabi Bagh, Tilak Nagar, Khyala, Vishnu Garden, and surrounding areas.
Strictness Increased After Indore Incident
Following the recent deaths of 16 people in Bhagirathpura, Indore, due to drinking contaminated water, the government has taken a strict stance. As part of this, the Delhi Jal Board has been instructed to inspect water pipelines passing near sewer lines to ensure there are no leaks or contamination.
Billing System Also Under Question
Amidst the water crisis, an internal report by the Delhi Jal Board has revealed another major flaw. Nearly 60% of consumers still don’t receive physical water bills. This has also impacted the government’s water bill amnesty scheme, as many people are unaware of their outstanding dues.
Billing System Will Be Changed, Minister Assures
Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma has clearly stated that the current billing system is outdated and ineffective. He stated that bills are reaching only about 40% of registered consumers. The government is now preparing to improve the entire system through new software so that people receive timely and accurate bills. It is worth noting that Delhi currently has 2.9 million registered water connections, which is significantly less than the actual number of households.
The next two days could be challenging for Delhiites regarding water. In such a situation, it is wise to use water judiciously and avoid unnecessary consumption. The water board says that the supply will be normalized as soon as the work is completed.
