Traffic Challan: A new system has been implemented in Gurgaon to deal with traffic offenders. Traffic police will no longer issue fines manually in areas equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. This step is designed to make the traffic system faster, more transparent, and more automated. The goal is to reduce dependence on traffic police and make the fine-filing process completely digital.

How the new system will work

ANPR cameras have been installed at several intersections and busy roads in the city. These cameras can simultaneously detect 14 types of traffic violations, such as overspeeding, jumping red lights, riding without a helmet, or driving in the wrong lane.

When someone violates a rule, the camera scans the vehicle’s number plate, immediately processes the data, and issues an e-challan in real time. The challan is sent directly to the vehicle owner’s mobile number or address.

Why this step was taken

According to Traffic DCP Dr. Rajesh Mohan, this system will increase both efficiency and accountability. He said, “From now on, ANPR cameras will automatically issue e-challans in real time. This will also eliminate problems like human error and arguments.”

People’s reactions on social media

The new rule has sparked a variety of reactions on social media. One user jokingly wrote, “It’s okay, now we’ll just declare the machine faulty!” Another asked, “What will the camera do if the vehicle doesn’t have a number plate?”

Some people also questioned whether the challan amount can be paid offline, or whether everything will be online. Many fear that if offline payments remain, there will still be opportunities for corruption.

However, the most frequently asked question to the police on social media was, “So how will the police catch people who drink and drive?” Officials have not yet provided a clear answer to this question.

What’s the future plan?

Currently, these cameras are operational at several major intersections in Gurgaon. The traffic department plans to expand them to more roads in the coming months. Physical challans will be discontinued at approximately 50 busy locations. This means that Gurgaon’s traffic system has now entered a completely digital era.
