Indian e-Passport: The government has launched the e-Passport facility to modernize the air travel documentation system. This e-Passport is designed to strengthen security, expedite immigration checks, and align with global travel standards. It simplifies the travel documentation process. Furthermore, the e-Passport represents a major technological shift in the way Indians will travel abroad in the coming years.

What is an e-Passport?

The e-Passport looks similar to a traditional Indian passport, but it has an electronic chip embedded in its back cover.

This chip stores the passport holder’s personal and biometric information. This includes information such as fingerprints, facial recognition data, and a digital signature.

What are the benefits of an e-Passport?

An e-passport offers numerous benefits, including improved security, faster immigration clearance for travelers, and improved global acceptance of the Indian passport. For India, an e-passport is a major step towards a smart and secure travel ecosystem. It will significantly facilitate global travel for Indian citizens in the digital age.

The biggest advantage of an e-passport is that the chip significantly reduces the risk of identity theft or duplication. This makes international travel more secure for Indian citizens.

Who can obtain an e-passport?

Any Indian citizen eligible for a regular passport can also apply for an e-passport. However, this facility is currently available only at select Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) across India.

Therefore, before applying, be sure to check whether e-passports are being issued at your nearest passport office. The government plans to gradually expand this service across the country so that new applicants and passport renewal applicants can benefit from this upgrade.

What is the application process?

The application process for an e-passport is similar to that for a regular passport. The applicant first registers on the official Passport Seva portal. They then fill out the online form, pay the required fees, and book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra.

During the appointment, the applicant’s biometric data, such as fingerprints and a photo, are taken. After the process is completed, an e-passport with an electronic chip is printed and sent to the applicant’s registered address.
