There is a piece of major relief news for salaried employees. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has now simplified the process for rectifying common discrepancies in PF accounts. Under this new facility, employees will now be able to remove incorrect Member IDs linked to their Universal Account Number (UAN) online.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced great news for millions of salaried individuals. It is often observed that due to minor technical glitches or incorrect information in their PF accounts, people’s funds get stuck—leaving them to face the arduous task of making endless rounds to the EPFO office to resolve the issue. However, this will no longer be the case! The EPFO has introduced a new online facility that allows you to rectify major discrepancies in your PF account yourself, right from the comfort of your home. Let’s explore what this new rule entails and how it will benefit you.
The biggest headache for PF account holders arises when an incorrect PF account number—or ‘Member ID’—gets linked to their Universal Account Number (UAN). The EPFO has now digitized this entire process, enabling you to de-link (remove) the incorrect ID online.
Why did this problem occur?
When an employee changes jobs, the PF funds from their previous employer are transferred to the new company’s Member ID. Frequently, due to technical glitches or negligence on the part of the company, another individual’s ID would get erroneously linked to the UAN, or two separate IDs belonging to the same employee would appear simultaneously. This caused significant hurdles when attempting to claim pension benefits or withdraw the entire accumulated balance. Previously, the only way to rectify such issues was to visit an EPFO office in person; however, this task can now be accomplished directly through the online portal.
Relief Now Available Even After Funds Have Been Deposited
The most significant change is that IDs into which a company has mistakenly deposited funds can now also be removed online. Previously, this facility was available only for accounts where no funds had been deposited. Under the new system, even if an amount has been deposited by mistake, you can now submit a request to have it removed.
How to Rectify the Error?
- First, the member must log in to the EPFO ’Member Portal’ and submit a request to remove the incorrect ID.
- This request will be sent directly to your company/employer. If the company accepts the request, the ID will be removed immediately.
- If the company fails to respond within two weeks, or if funds have been deposited into that ID between 2 and 6 times, the matter will be referred to the Regional Office. There, following an investigation, the request will either be approved or rejected.
Keep These Conditions in Mind
- It is mandatory for your mobile number and Aadhaar card to be linked to your UAN.
- If contributions have been deposited into an ID more than six times, it cannot be removed online.
- If a claim is already pending or has been settled against that ID, the request will be rejected.
