FASTag KYV: NHAI has made a major change to the FASTag rules for private vehicles. KYV will no longer be required when purchasing a new FASTag for vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans. This rule will come into effect on February 1, 2026.
FASTag Rules Change: If you own a car and frequently travel on highways, there’s good news for you. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has made a major change to the rules for issuing FASTags. Starting February 1, 2026, private vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans will no longer need to provide a KYV (Know Your Vehicle) ID when purchasing a new FASTag. Owners of these vehicles will no longer have to worry about KYV. This is intended to make travel at toll plazas easier. Let us explain who this rule applies to and what benefits it will bring.
No Delays Now
The NHAI has eliminated the KYV (Know Your Vehicle) ID requirement for small vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans. Previously, even after activating a FASTag, vehicle owners would receive calls from banks asking for further document submission or verification. This was a source of inconvenience and often resulted in delays in activating the tag. Now, all this hassle has been eliminated. Once you receive the tag from the bank, it will be ready for use immediately.
Banks will have full responsibility
Banks will now be solely responsible for verifying your vehicle information. Banks will verify your vehicle information directly from the government’s VAHAN database. Banks will verify all your required documents at the time of issuing the tag. Once you receive the tag, you will not need to submit any documents again. This will eliminate the need for repeated verification for customers.
Relief for old users too
Even if you already have a Fastag, you don’t need to worry. Unless a defect is found with the Fastag, you won’t be asked for verification. Investigations will only be conducted in cases where the Fastag is found to be installed on the wrong vehicle, a complaint has been received regarding the tag, the tag is not installed correctly, or the Fastag is being misused.
Why was this decision taken?
NHAI had been receiving feedback for a long time that despite having valid documents, people were getting stuck in the process. Sometimes, people’s money was also stuck in the system. This government move will make travel at toll plazas even easier and faster. This exemption is only applicable to private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans. Commercial vehicles (such as buses and trucks) are not exempted.
