Free Bus Service: In the national capital, Delhi, over 400,000 Pink Cards have been issued to facilitate free bus travel for women. Initially, 50 centers were designated for the issuance of these Pink Cards; this number has now been increased to 58.
At these centers, approximately 12,500 cards are currently being issued daily—exceeding the previous daily target of 10,000. The issuance of Pink Cards commenced on March 3. Currently, women who have not yet obtained a Pink Card are also being extended the facility of free bus travel. The DTC has set a target to issue Pink Cards to all women in Delhi by May 31.
Women Can Complete the Registration Process from Home
To simplify and expedite the process of obtaining the ‘Saheli Pink Card’ in Delhi, a QR code-based digital onboarding facility has been introduced. Under this system, women can complete the registration process from the comfort of their homes by scanning a QR code using their mobile phones. The process begins with the verification of the mobile number via an OTP, followed by identity verification through an Aadhaar OTP.
Relief from Standing in Long Queues
It was explained that the digitization of the entire process provides relief from difficulties such as standing in long queues and the repetitive verification of documents. Upon the completion of registration, a confirmation QR code is generated; by presenting this code at the nearest Pink Card issuance center, one can easily obtain the card.
Ban Imposed on Re-generating Tickets
Furthermore, to prevent the misuse of the card, a restriction has been imposed on generating a second ticket using the same card within a one-hour period on the same bus. However, a misconception is currently circulating among women regarding the usage of the pass while traveling by bus—specifically, the belief that once they disembark from a bus, they must wait for one hour before boarding another bus.
Aman Dev Chikara, Deputy General Manager (PR) at the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), clarified that this perception is entirely incorrect. He stated that if a woman alights from one bus and immediately boards another, she can generate a ticket using her Pink Card without any hindrance. He added that this restriction applies only to repeatedly tapping the card within the same bus.
