Under the new rule, several districts in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana, and Odisha have been included in this system. For example, districts like Barmer, Bundi, and Karauli in Rajasthan, Botad and Morbi in Gujarat, Gadag and Raichur in Karnataka, Mancherial and Peddapalli in Telangana, and Nayagarh and Sundargarh in Odisha are included.
What is BIS Gold Hallmarking?
Hallmarking is an official identification of the purity of gold. It indicates the purity of the gold used in the jewelry. In India, this system is regulated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Currently, hallmarking is mandatory for 14-carat, 18-carat, and 22-carat gold jewelry.
Jewelers are required to register
If a jeweler wishes to sell hallmarked jewelry, they must first register with the BIS. The jewelry is then sent to a BIS-accredited assaying and hallmarking center for testing. Only if the testing meets the standards is the jewelry hallmarked.
The system was launched in 2021
The government first made gold hallmarking mandatory in 256 districts across the country on June 23, 2021. Now, the scope of this system has been expanded by adding new districts. This will give customers greater confidence in purchasing pure gold and reduce the possibility of fraud in the market.
