According to a report, D2M trials are going on in many cities. Department of Science and Technology (DST) Secretary Abhay Karandikar said in a statement that we will have to trial D2M in many cities before fully launching it.
What is D2M and what are its benefits?
D2M is a direct to mobile broadcasting technology that does not require internet. With the help of D2M, you can watch videos on your smartphone without internet. It is much like Direct to Home (DTH). Its big advantage will be that users in those areas will also be able to watch videos on OTT apps where there is no internet access.
D2M will reach every corner of the country. After the release of D2M, the need for high-speed internet will be eliminated at least for watching videos, but a big problem with it is that it will not be supported in the phones currently available in the market.
After the launch of D2M, new phones with D2M support will also be launched. For D2M support, all mobile brands will have to provide a D2M antenna in their phones which will work like a setup box for DTH.
