Maharashtra Marriage Incentive Scheme: To ensure that disabled people can settle down and live a life like normal people, the government has launched a new initiative. It has decided to provide incentives for their marriage. According to the order, if a disabled person marries a normal person, the government will provide an incentive of ₹1.50 lakh, and if a disabled person marries a disabled person, the incentive will be ₹2.50 lakh. This amount will be deposited through DBT in the joint bank account of the husband and wife. It will be mandatory to keep 50 percent of this amount in an FD for five years, so that the couple can have financial security in the future.

The government has taken a significant step to change the prevailing social perception regarding marriage for disabled people. Major improvements have been made to the Disabled-Normal (Avyang) Marriage Incentive Scheme and the grant amount has been increased to make it more effective. On Thursday, the Department for Disability Welfare issued a government decision in this regard. According to Tukaram Mundhe, Secretary of the Department for Disability Welfare, people with disabilities are often associated with disabilities, which impacts important decisions like marriage. Families often postpone marriages or arrange incompatible matches. Women with disabilities, in particular, face double discrimination. This initiative aims to change this mindset and bring people with disabilities into the mainstream of society.

How will you receive the money upon marriage? What are the eligibility criteria?

According to the government’s decision, the bride or groom must have a valid UDID card with at least 40% disability. One of the disabled bride or groom must be a resident of Maharashtra. The bride and groom must be married for the first time. In case of divorce, the marriage must not have previously benefited from this scheme. Legal registration of the marriage is mandatory. Applications must be made within one year of marriage. The application must be submitted to the relevant district office along with all necessary documents. Beneficiaries will be selected by a committee headed by the Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Parishad. The approved list will be sent to the Disability Welfare Commissioner, Pune, from where the grant will be distributed.

What documents are required?

To apply under this scheme, a certificate of at least 40% disability is required. Additionally, a residence certificate from a permanent resident of Maharashtra, a marriage certificate, an Aadhaar card, and a bank account number will be required.
