Affordable Calling and Data: If you recharge your mobile phone every month, this news is of utmost importance to you. A significant announcement has emerged from the Central Government for mobile users. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is preparing to offer major relief to customers who use their phones primarily for voice calling. TRAI has issued a consultation paper and has initiated the process of issuing directives to telecom companies. Going forward, telecom operators will be required to offer voice packs with validity periods of one month, three months, six months, and one year.

According to a report published by CNBC Awaaz, TRAI has sought suggestions from all stakeholders regarding this proposal by April 28. A final decision will be taken thereafter. This move by the government is expected to intensify competition within the telecom sector and provide customers with a wider range of options.

Data Plans May Soon Be Phased Out

Essentially, mobile users are currently compelled to purchase data plans in order to recharge their accounts. Now, according to the regulator, these voice-only plans will be significantly cheaper compared to data plans. This will benefit those who make limited use of the internet. Consequently, senior citizens and consumers in rural areas stand to gain significantly.

Family Packs Are Now More Affordable

Currently, Jio’s most popular family plan starts at ₹449. This plan offers 75GB of data on the primary SIM card. It also includes the benefits of unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS per day. You can add up to three additional SIM cards to this plan at a cost of ₹150 each. An entire family of four can stay connected for just ₹899 (₹449 + ₹150 × 3)—meaning a cost of only ₹225 per person. The plan also features a data-sharing facility, allowing any member to utilize a larger portion of the data allowance.

Airtel Postpaid Family Plans

Airtel also offers robust options for families. The ₹699 plan provides 2 connections (1+1)—including unlimited 4G/5G data, unlimited calling, and 100 SMS per day. It also includes OTT subscriptions such as Amazon Prime and Disney+ Hotstar. For larger families, choose the ₹1,199 or ₹1,399 plans, which offer up to 4 connections (1+3). The total data allowance ranges from 190GB to 240GB, which is shared across the connections.
