Pune: There’s good news for those who missed installing high-security number plates (HSRP) in Maharashtra. The Transport Department has extended the deadline for installing high-security number plates until December 31st. This is the fifth time the department has extended the deadline. However, more than 1.5 million vehicles in Pune still have high-security number plates. Therefore, the question is: will they be able to install these many plates in a month?

HSRP is mandatory for vehicles manufactured before April 1, 2019.

According to a High Court order, the Transport Department had ordered the installation of security number plates on vehicles manufactured before April 1, 2019. Following this, the process of installing these number plates has been implemented since January. This will make it easier to identify vehicles involved in accidents or crimes and ensure everyone’s safety. Security number plates are being made mandatory for all vehicles. It is also being said that this number plate will help in easily identifying vehicles involved in various crimes and accidents.

What is the situation in Pune?

So far, 750,000 vehicle owners in Pune have installed security number plates, while approximately 10.5 million have registered for them. Vehicles worth more than 2.5 million rupees in Pune are required to have security number plates. However, it has been observed that approximately 100,000 vehicles have been registered. This means that approximately 150,000 vehicles in Pune alone still lack security number plates.

Fine to be imposed after December 31st

Despite several extensions from the Transport Department, they have not paid any attention to this matter. 65% of vehicles in Pune still do not have security number plates. Currently, vehicles without security number plates are not being processed at the RTO. An appeal has been made to get them installed immediately, as after December 31st, vehicles without number plates will be fined.

How many vehicles need to be fitted with high-security number plates?

Across Maharashtra, the number of old vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, is approximately 21 million. Of these, 9 million vehicles have already been registered for high-security number plates. Of these, 7.3 million vehicles have already been fitted with high-security number plates. If one plate breaks or becomes damaged, drivers face the hassle of purchasing both plates. This is why Baba Shinde, President of the State Vehicle Owners and Representatives Federation, has requested the government extend the deadline for high-security number plates. Previously, the deadlines were extended to April 30, June 30, August 15, and November 30.
