The successful trial of India’s first hydrogen train is a historic achievement, which will take Indian Railways towards zero emission (zero carbon emission).
Hydrogen Train: The country’s first hydrogen train began trials on Wednesday. The train successfully ran for approximately 20 kilometers from Jind railway station to Lalitkheda station. Afterward, a diesel engine was installed and the train was taken to Mohana station. Railway officials described the trials as satisfactory.
The hydrogen train rolled out of the yard at 7 a.m. on Wednesday. Using a diesel engine, it first pulled the train under the Hansi Road Bridge. The train stopped there briefly. It was then brought back to the junction, where it departed for Sonipat at 8:25 a.m.
At 8:40 am, the train was brought to Pindara using a diesel engine. From there, the diesel engine was removed and the train was trialed using a hydrogen engine to Lalitkheda. The train ran twice between the two stations. During this time, the train’s speed was measured at approximately 70 kilometers per hour.
After reaching Pindara, the hydrogen train was driven by a diesel engine to Mohana, then to Gohana. From Mohana, the train was brought back to Jind. The entire process was closely monitored by a technical team.
Speed, brakes, and fuel cell were tested during the trial.
During the trial, the train’s speed, braking system, hydrogen fuel cell performance, and safety standards were tested. Upon arrival at Bhambheva station, experts also conducted a technical inspection of the engine and coaches. It is reported that if all standards are found satisfactory, the hydrogen train will soon be regularly operated on the tracks.
The next phase of trials will extend to Sonipat.
The next phase of trials will see the train run to Sonipat. The trials will continue at different times over the next three to four days. During this period, the train’s maximum speed, fuel consumption, coordination with the signal system, and response to emergency situations will be tested.
What is the technology?
Hydrogen train technology is simple yet revolutionary. It’s based on hydrogen fuel cells, which run the train on electricity without diesel or overhead wires. India’s first hydrogen train was also tested using this technology.
