IMD Rain & Heatwave Alert: The country’s weather is currently witnessing significant upheaval. According to the latest press release from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), drastic changes in weather conditions are expected across several states over the next 48 hours. On one hand, an alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for Northeast India; on the other, temperatures in states like Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are feared to reach record-breaking levels.

Northeast India: Alert for Extremely Heavy Rainfall in Arunachal

The coming days are set to be quite challenging for the states of the Northeast. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a strong likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh on April 20 and 21. In Assam and Meghalaya, the spell of torrential rain is expected to continue between April 19 and 21. Furthermore, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are forecast to experience thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds gusting at speeds of 30–50 km/h until April 22.

UP, MP, and Rajasthan: Severe Heatwave Alert

In the plains, the sun’s intensity has now turned life-threatening. The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for several states. Eastern Uttar Pradesh is expected to experience a severe heatwave between April 20 and 23. Meanwhile, Western Uttar Pradesh will remain under the grip of a heatwave from April 20 to 22. A heatwave alert remains in effect for Eastern Rajasthan and Eastern Madhya Pradesh until April 23. Western Rajasthan will experience heatwave conditions between April 20 and 23. In Punjab and Haryana, severe heat and heatwave conditions are likely to persist from April 21 to 23. Additionally, in Haryana and Odisha, ‘warm nights’ are expected to exacerbate discomfort for residents.

Risk of Hailstorms and Storms

Amidst the rising temperatures, warnings for hailstorms and squalls have also been issued for certain states. Hailfall is likely in parts of Telangana, North Interior Karnataka, Central Maharashtra, and Marathwada. Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh may witness rain and snowfall, while the weather in Uttarakhand is expected to remain inclement until April 20. Bihar faces the possibility of a ‘thundersquall’ on April 23, during which wind speeds could reach up to 70 km per hour.

South and West India: Rain and Humidity

States in South India—such as Karnataka, Telangana, and Kerala—are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning until April 23. However, humid heat will continue to trouble residents in Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Coastal Karnataka. In the Gangetic Plains of West Bengal, severe humidity is forecast from April 20 to April 25.

According to the IMD, a Western Disturbance is currently active in the form of a trough. Additionally, a cyclonic circulation lies over southwestern Rajasthan and eastern Uttar Pradesh. A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect the northwestern Himalayan region starting April 23, which could lead to renewed changes in weather conditions over the coming days.
