IMD Rainfall Alert: The International Monetary Fund (IMD) has issued a weather alert. According to reports, a Western Disturbance is expected to bring rain and snowfall between December 18 and 22. The cold wave may also intensify in North India.
IMD Rainfall Alert: The weather is rapidly changing across the country, and the next 24 to 48 hours could prove challenging for many states. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, rain, strong winds, fog, cold waves, and snowfall will be experienced from South India to the North and hilly areas between December 18 and 22. The cold is expected to intensify due to the increasingly active Western Disturbance. The Meteorological Department says this change could impact traffic, flights, and rail services. People need to exercise caution due to poor visibility in many areas.
Many parts of South India may experience inclement weather for a day. Rain accompanied by strong winds and lightning is expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Andaman and Nicobar region. Heavy rain is possible in Chennai and surrounding areas. Life has already been disrupted by continuous rain for the past few days, and there is little hope for relief at this time.
Western Disturbances Will Intensify Cold
According to the Meteorological Department, two western disturbances will enter the country one after the other. The first disturbance will become active around December 18th, and the second around December 20th. Their impact could worsen the weather in North India and the hilly states. Rain and snowfall are expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, while cold winds in the plains could cause temperatures to drop.
Impact of Fog and Cold Wave in North India
Dense fog is disrupting life in several states, including Uttar Pradesh. Visibility is severely reduced in the morning, impacting road and rail traffic. Many trains are running late, and some have even forced cancellations. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding severe cold and fog in several districts of the state.
Cold weather adds to Delhi-NCR’s woes
Cold, fog, and pollution have exacerbated residents’ hardships in Delhi and surrounding areas. Minimum temperatures are expected to drop further over the next two days, exacerbating the chill. Air quality remains in the very poor category and could reach severe levels in some areas. Fog is causing traffic problems during the morning and night hours.
Winter intensifies in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan
Dense fog and cold winds are prevailing in several districts of Madhya Pradesh. Traffic is being affected in Gwalior, Chambal, and surrounding areas due to reduced visibility. Meanwhile, cold has begun to intensify in Rajasthan. Minimum temperatures have dropped significantly in some areas, and nighttime temperatures are becoming extremely cold.
Possibility of snowfall in hilly states
High-altitude areas of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir are likely to experience snowfall in the coming days. This is expected to further reduce temperatures. In some areas, the mercury may reach near zero, further intensifying the cold. Travelers heading towards the mountains have been advised to be cautious considering the weather.
