Southwest Monsoon is expected to hit Kerala around May 31. The south-west monsoon generally enters Kerala on 1 June with a back-and-forth lag of about 7 days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said the southwest monsoon is expected to hit Kerala around May 31. The south-west monsoon generally enters Kerala on 1 June with a back-and-forth lag of about 7 days. After this it usually moves rapidly towards North India and covers the entire country around July 15.

As per IMD estimates, this year’s southwest monsoon is expected to reach Kerala around May 31, with a head-and-head margin of 4 days. This date acts as an important indicator of the progress of monsoon across the country. In fact, North India, which is suffering from scorching heat, eagerly waits for the monsoon.

IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra said on Wednesday, “It is not early. “This is close to the normal date as the normal date of onset of monsoon in Kerala is June 1.” Last month, the IMD had predicted above normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon season that runs from June to September. June and July are considered to be the most important monsoon months for agriculture as most of the sowing of Kharif crops takes place during this period.

The IMD said its forecasts regarding the onset date of monsoon over Kerala during the last 19 years had proved correct except in 2015. Earlier, according to a report released by the Meteorological Department on Tuesday, the southwest monsoon is likely to advance into the South Andaman Sea, parts of the southeast Bay of Bengal and Nicobar Islands around May 19. A new round of heat wave is likely to start in North-West India from May 16 and in Eastern India from May 18, 2024. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) gave this information in its forecast released on Wednesday.
