Income Tax Refund Status: Did you file your Income Tax Return (ITR) on time, but haven’t received your refund yet? If you’re one of the millions of taxpayers who check their bank balance every morning, this news is for you. The tax department has clarified that refund delays aren’t due to technical glitches, but rather to minor mistakes. In this news, we’ll explain where and why your refund is stuck.

Lack of Bank Account Pre-Validation

The tax department now only transfers funds to accounts that are pre-validated on the portal. If you’ve opened a new account or haven’t updated your old account information, the refund may show a failed status. In such a case, visit the e-filing portal and validate your account in the ‘My Bank Account’ section.

The department is closely monitoring high-value refunds.

According to the CBDT, this year the department is closely examining refunds where the refund amount is very high or where taxpayers have claimed additional deductions (such as HRA, 80C) outside of Form 16. The department wants to ensure that these claims are not fraudulent.

Delays in e-verification

Filing your ITR is not enough. It is also necessary to e-verify it within 30 days of filing. If you haven’t verified it using your Aadhaar OTP yet, your return will not be processed, and forget about your refund.

Data Mismatch

If there’s even a slight discrepancy between your declared income and the information shown in your AIS (Annual Information Statement) or 26AS, the system withholds your refund. Failing to disclose earnings from cryptocurrency or online gaming can also be costly.

How to Check Your Refund Status

  • Log in to the Income Tax Portal.
  • Go to the e-File tab and click on Income Tax Returns.
  • Go to View Filed Returns. Here you can check the status of your latest return. If the Refund Reissue option appears, there’s a mistake in your bank details.

Expert Advice

Tax experts say that if your refund is stuck, be sure to check your Pending Actions tab. The department has sent notice messages to many taxpayers, and failing to respond to them could result in a permanent refund holdup.
