It is noteworthy that till yesterday i.e. Saturday, more than five crore ITRs have been filled.

New Delhi: Today is the last day to file Income Tax Return for the financial year 2021-22. If you have not filed your return yet, do submit it today. If you do not do this, then you may face a heavy late fine. By the way, let me tell you that till a day before the deadline for submission of ITR is over, more than five crore returns have been filed. Aayakar Seva Kendras across the country will remain open for the help of taxpayers even though today is a Sunday.

Make sure to file ITR today

The Income Tax Department on Saturday gave information about the return filers on its official Twitter handle. Along with this, taxpayers were requested to file Income Tax Return (ITR) by the scheduled date 31 July 2022 i.e. 11.59 PM tonight. The department has said that the return must be submitted by the stipulated time to avoid late fine.

More than 5 crore returns deposited till Saturday evening only

The Income Tax Department said that more than five crore crore returns have been filed till 8.36 pm on Saturday for the assessment year 2022-23. Earlier till July 29, 4.52 crore ITRs had been filed.

Income Tax Seva Kendra will open despite being Sunday

Today is the last day for filing income tax returns. But today is also Sunday. Government offices are closed on Sundays. In view of this, the government has decided that even today being a Sunday, Aayakar Seva Kendras across the country will remain open. An order in this regard has also been issued from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the regulatory body of the Income Tax Department.

Quick resolution of issues related to e-filing portal

A senior official said that the issues related to the e-filing portal are being resolved immediately and every doubt and query coming from the taxpayers is being answered. When asked about the demand on social media platforms for extension of the deadline for submission of income tax returns, the official said that at present the department is not thinking about it.

5.89 crore returns were deposited last year

The deadline for filing income tax returns for the financial year 2020-21 or for the assessment year 2021-22 was extended till December 31, 2021. A total of 5.89 crore returns were filed during this period.

How much is the late fine for late filing of income tax return

At present, the Income Tax Act of India allows individuals to file ITR even after the expiry of the deadline. But there is a late fine on ITR filed after the deadline. The rule for individuals is that if the ITR is filed after July 31, a late filing fee of Rs 5,000 will be levied. This late filing fee will be charged under section 234F. For small taxpayers whose taxable income does not exceed Rs 5 lakh, a penalty of Rs 1,000 will be levied for missing the ITR filing deadline.
