You can now correct any errors in your Income Tax Return. The government has released an updated return form, ITR-U, that allows you to correct past errors and report correctly within four years. This may require a separate penalty, but this process helps avoid income tax-related hassles.
If you make a mistake while filing your Income Tax Return (ITR), there’s no need to worry. The Income Tax Department has provided the facility to file a Revised Return and an Updated Return (ITR-U), allowing you to correct errors and submit correct information. This process is proving to be very helpful for taxpayers.
What is an Income Tax Rectification (Revised Return)?
If you filed your ITR on time (by the due date), but still have a mistake, you can correct it. You can file a revised return under Section 139(5) of the Income Tax Act. You can make any changes to your income, deductions, exemptions, or personal information. This correction return is filed for the year for which you filed the return.
What is an Updated Return (ITR-U)?
If you’ve misreported your returns in the past few years or missed filing them, you can file an updated return within four years, as per Income Tax Department rules. This rule was introduced in Budget 2022 and has been simplified starting in 2025.
How to correct or update your return?
1. First, log in to the Income Tax Department’s official website, www.incometax.gov.in.
2. Go to the Return Filing section and select the “Revised Return” or “Updated Return” option.
3. Enter the relevant information from your old return, such as receipt number, date, etc.
4. Make the necessary corrections and submit.
5. It is necessary to e-verify your return, which you can do using Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or digital signature.
Benefits of Filing a Corrected Return
If you are receiving income tax notices or a refund delay due to incorrect reporting, filing a corrected return can solve all your problems. It also saves you from additional taxes, penalties, and legal hassles.
