File ITR With These Easy Steps: If you have to pay tax before filing your Income Tax Return (ITR), you can now do so only on the e-Filing Portal of the Income Tax Department. Earlier it was necessary to pay income tax through the NSDL portal. However, this year the tax department has shifted this facility to the income tax e-filing portal. If you want to pay tax, then here we will tell you its easy steps.

Without logging into account

  • Go to ITR Portal – Link
  • Select the option ‘e-pay tax’ under ‘Quick Links’
  • Enter PAN and mobile number, click on continue. OTP will come on the mobile number. Enter OTP and click on submit
  • A new web page will open showing the hidden details of your name and complete details of your PAN. Click on Continue. Then a new tab will open, here click on the option ‘New Payment’
  • Then a new webpage will open. There will be an option to pay various types of taxes, ie Self Assessment Tax, TDS, TCS etc. Select whichever option is applicable to you
  • Click on the Proceed button inside the dialog box for the type of payment you want to make. Then a new webpage will open which will ask for some details to make the tax payment. You are required to enter the Assessment Year and Tax Payment Type
  • Note that if you are paying self assessment tax for FY 2022-23, then the assessment year will be 2023-24
  • After clicking on proceed a new webpage will open where you will have to provide tax payment details like income tax, surcharge, cess etc. Enter the details in the appropriate column and check. Click on Continue. If you do not have the break-up of the amount, you can enter the final tax liability amount including surcharge and cess under income tax amount
  • The next step is to make tax payment. There are five options to pay tax – Net Banking, Debit Card, Payment at Bank Counter (Bank Challan), RTGS/NEFT and Payment Gateway. There are four online options and offline mode of payment at the bank counter.
  • After selecting the preferred online option, click on ‘Continue’
  • Check tax details and click on Pay Now. Select ‘Terms and Conditions’
  • Once agreed, click on ‘Submit to Bank’. Pay tax as per option selected

By logging into your account

  • Go to the ITR portal and login to your account by entering your User ID (PAN) and Password
  • After logging in, click on ‘e-File’ and select the option ‘e-Pay’
  • From here on, the process of online tax payment is the same as mentioned in step 5 above

Keep this in mind

The Income Tax Department has said that only TDS and TCS information will be shown in Form 26AS of taxpayers. Other tax payments such as self-assessment tax and advance tax will appear in the Annual Information Statement (AIS).
