JEE Advanced exam: There’s big news for millions of engineering students across the country. For students dreaming of admission to IITs, the date for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Advanced) 2026 has been finalized. This year, the JEE Advanced exam will be held on May 17, 2026. Based on the JEE Main 2026 results, approximately 2.5 lakh students will be able to appear for this prestigious exam. This time, the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) has been entrusted with the responsibility of conducting the JEE Advanced.

As with every year, only students who perform well in the JEE Main will be eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced. The number of students to be called for different categories has already been determined. However, considering the trends of the past few years, this number could be slightly higher than 2.5 lakh. This is due to students often having equal scores, a tie situation.

When two or more students have the same marks, certain rules are followed to determine the rank. First, it’s determined which student has the most positive marks. JEE Advanced also has negative marking, meaning incorrect answers result in a deduction. Therefore, selecting the right questions becomes crucial. If the positive marks are also equal, the math score is considered first. If there’s still a tie, the physics score is considered. If the scores are the same after all these factors, the students are assigned the same rank.

Last Year’s Situation

Regarding previous years, approximately 250,284 students were in the running for JEE Advanced in 2024. In 2025, this number dropped slightly to approximately 250,236. The cutoff in 2025 also decreased slightly, which benefited some students. Similarly, this time also students are hopeful that if the preparation is good, then the path to admission in IIT can open.

When will registrations begin?

The registration process for JEE Advanced 2026 will begin on April 23, 2026, and continue until May 2, 2026. Eligible candidates will be able to apply online during this period. The exam will be conducted in two shifts on the same day. The first shift will run from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, while the second shift will run from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Appearing for both papers is mandatory for all candidates. Absence in any one paper will result in a disqualification.

What are the rules?

According to the exam rules, a candidate’s date of birth must be on or after October 1, 2001, to appear for JEE Advanced. Age relaxation is provided to students from reserved categories as per the rules. Furthermore, a student can only appear for this exam a maximum of two times, and that too in two consecutive years. This means that if a student has already appeared for JEE Advanced twice, they will not be eligible for a second chance.
