Kangana Ranaut in new controversy: Allegations of theft, ‘Didda’ Writer claims copyright infringement

Mumbai: Kangana Ranaut’s name has now been linked to another controversy. Yesterday i.e. on the 14th of January, Kangana Ranaut announced to make her new film ‘Manikarnika Returns – The Legend of Didda’ based on Didda, known as ‘Warrior Queen of Kashmir’. But with this announcement, his film has come under the scanner.

In 2019, ‘Didda – The Queen’s Warrior of Kashmir’ writer and descendant of Didda, Ashish Kaul spoke to  accusing Kangana Ranaut of copyright infringement of his English book to make his film .

Talking to Ashish Kaul said, “The world was unfamiliar with the adventures of Rani Didda, who ruled the Lohar area of Kashmir almost 1000 years ago and only 99% of people came to know about her heroic stories through my book. Since I am a descendant of Didda, I got all kinds of material to write a book on him directly from my maternal grandmother Saubhagyavati Killam. After about 6 years of hard work, I got to write it. My book is written by someone on Didda Is the only book written and based on authentic and historical facts. ”

Ashish says that he has also made a documentary on Didda for the series ‘Stree Desh – Forgotten Women of Kashmir’, a documentary series commissioned by the Indira Gandhi Center for Arts under the Government of India, which is ready and will be released soon. In this documentary series of 13 episodes, Ashish has also shown the valor stories of 12 other unfamiliar women.

Ashish says, “I requested to write a prologue for the Hindi translation of my book written in English through a mail written to him from Kangana Ranaut. In this mail I also attached the story of my Didda. I sent this mail to him 11 I wrote to September 2019, to which I have not received any reply till now. Apart from this, I had also tagged Kangana several times on Twitter in connection with my book, which you people can see yourself. ”

Ashish further adds, “I have no objection to anyone making a film on Didda, but when there is no material available on Didda other than my book, Kangana and her team should tell that to make their film. What is Aadhaar and Source? Based on whose story is she making a film? ” Ashish told that he himself is working on the script of his book and he is currently in talks with several production houses.

Have they had any talk with Kangana Ranaut or the film’s producer Kamal Jain on the issue of copyright of the book and will they take the legal route? On this question of Ashish says, “I have kept every option open to me. The problem I have is that if you are filming on historical facts then it means it is based on my book and if it is a fictional film In this case, not giving me credit is a violation of my hard work and my copyright. ”

Significantly, to know Kangana Ranaut’s side on this issue, he also contacted his team and the producer of the film, Kamal Jain, but no response was received from him until the news was written.
