Zomato: Deepinder Goyal, founder and CEO of Eternal, Zomato’s parent company, has stated that the company’s food delivery unit (Zomato) lays off approximately 5,000 gig workers every month. He revealed this during a podcast with YouTuber Raj Shamani.

Millions of gig workers voluntarily leave their jobs

He also stated that in addition to layoffs, approximately 150,000 to 200,000 gig workers voluntarily leave their jobs every month. Furthermore, the company hires approximately 150,000 to 200,000 new people every month. Until the last quarter, food delivery was Eternal’s largest business, but then its quick commerce unit, Blinkit, overtook it.

However, Gurugram-based Zomato remains the company’s largest profit-generating engine. Apart from Zomato and Blinkit, Eternal also runs a going out business at the district label and a business-to-business (B2B) grocery supply vertical, Hyperpure.

Reasons for Massive Layoffs

Regarding the large number of people leaving their delivery jobs, Deepinder said, “Many people consider this role temporary. Some people take up this job when they suddenly need money, but then leave after earning enough money.”

Speaking about the large-scale layoffs, Deepinder said that fraudulent practices often stem from incidents like delivery partners showing food as delivered when it hasn’t been delivered, or cases where customers are promised change for cash-on-delivery orders but never receive it.

Perks for Gig Workers

He also wrote about the perks provided to gig workers, saying that demanding PF or a guaranteed salary for gig workers, like full-time employees, is inappropriate for the model it was designed for. This is because delivery partners don’t have fixed shifts and aren’t assigned a fixed location to work. They decide when to log in and out, or where they want to deliver within the city. They choose their own locations. They have the freedom to add or remove work locations as per their choice.
