Mercedes-Benz S680 Guard: The new S-Class always makes headlines, and this time Mercedes-Benz has gone beyond just a minor facelift. Over 2,700 parts have been changed in the updated W223 generation, blurring the distinction between a mid-cycle refresh and a next-gen model. While a lot of attention has been paid to a cleaner six-cylinder engine and a new V8, the real highlight lies in the top-of-the-range model: a twin-turbo V12 engine—already available in the ultra-secure S680 Guard. Before the arrival of the refreshed Mercedes-Maybach S-Class with twelve cylinders later this year, the armored Mercedes-Benz S680 Guard represents the V12 engine for the 2027 S-Class lineup.

This is no ordinary luxury car. It is a mobile safe room designed for heads of state, diplomats and high-risk individuals who require maximum security without compromising comfort.

According to Motor1, the car is powered by Mercedes’ trusted 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine, producing 603 hp and 830 Nm. It’s quite powerful, but it also has a huge task: propelling a vehicle weighing approximately 4.2 tons due to its heavy armoring. Despite this, the all-wheel drive sedan can reach a top speed of 190 km/h, which is sufficient for a safe journey.

The S680 Guard truly stands out when it comes to safety. Mercedes says it’s the only sedan in series production to feature VR10 ballistic protection for both glass and body panels. Simply put, the car can withstand high-caliber gunfire and certain types of explosions. Its windows are slightly thicker, the body has been reinforced, and it also has an onboard fire-extinguishing system in case of an engine attack.

Safety is maintained inside as well. A Fresh-Air Emergency System releases compressed air into the cabin to prevent harmful gases from entering. The doors are so heavy that Mercedes provides servo assistance for easy opening and closing. There are also hydraulic window lifters, so the windows will remain functional even if the electrical system fails.

The car is equipped with Michelin PAX run-flat tires, which can travel up to 30 km after a puncture. For official use, flag poles can be installed on the Guard’s front fenders. Pricing for the updated model has not yet been announced, but the previous version started at over €547,000 (approximately ₹5,92,57,057) in Germany, more than double the price of a standard Maybach S-Class. Later this year, a Maybach version with a V12 engine will also be available for customers who want ultimate luxury without sacrificing safety.

This car is attractive, but out of reach. However, it shows the heights engineering can reach when luxury, performance, and safety are combined in one vehicle.
