Bank Downtime 2025: Millions of customers across the country will experience disruptions in banking services during the night and early morning hours of September 21, 2025. State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank have announced scheduled system upgrades and maintenance. As a result, customers may temporarily encounter issues using services such as UPI, net banking, mobile banking, ATM transactions, and RTGS. The banks have issued advance warnings to customers, advising them to complete their essential transactions beforehand.
SBI’s Schedule and Alternatives
SBI has announced that its UPI services will be unavailable from 12:15 AM to 1:00 AM on September 21. However, the bank stated that UPI Lite will continue to function normally during this period. This means that users will be able to make small payments without any interruption.
According to NPCI, a single transaction using UPI Lite can be up to ₹1000. The maximum limit for daily transactions is ₹10,000. Furthermore, the maximum balance that can be held in a UPI Lite account at any given time is ₹5,000.
HDFC Bank Downtime
HDFC Bank has informed its customers that several of its services will be unavailable from 1:00 AM to 5:30 AM on September 21. During this time, mutual fund transactions, RTGS, TPT registration, IPIN regeneration, debit card-related services, and limit modifications via net banking and mobile banking will not be available. The bank has requested its customers not to plan any essential transactions during these hours.
Kotak Mahindra Bank Alert
Kotak Mahindra Bank has also informed its customers via social media that its net banking, mobile banking, ATM, UPI, and payment services will be unavailable for one hour on September 21. This downtime will be from 1:30 AM to 2:30 AM. The bank stated that this is for system upgrades to improve the customer experience.
What customers should do
Disruptions in banking services will directly impact regular customers. Therefore, banks have advised customers to complete their transactions in advance, especially those related to services that will be unavailable on September 21. For smaller payments, customers can use UPI Lite. For larger transactions, banks have requested that customers choose alternative times to conduct their transactions.
Several key services of SBI, HDFC Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank will be temporarily unavailable from midnight to early morning on September 21. However, the banks have provided timely information to their customers, giving them an opportunity to avoid any inconvenience.
