PM Visit To Mumbai- The twin tunnels will pass under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and will create a direct connection between the Western Express Highway in Borivali and Ghodbunder Road in Thane.
New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of several schemes simultaneously in Mumbai, Maharashtra today. These schemes include two twin tunnels between Thane and Borivali as well as BMC’s Goregaon Mulund Link Road. Thane-Boriwali Twin Tunnel is an ambitious project of Mumbai, which was approved by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) in 2015. After nine years, work is now starting on it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the work by performing Bhoomi Pujan of the tunnel today.
The twin tunnel will pass under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and will create a direct connection between the Western Express Highway in Borivali and Ghodbunder Road in Thane. Currently there is no direct connection between Thane and Borivali. Thane Ghodbunder Road (SH-42) is a major link road connecting the East West Link. There is heavy traffic on it. The distance from Thane to Borivali is 23 kms via Ghodbunder. During peak hours in the morning and evening, it takes around 1 to 1.5 hours to cover the distance from Thane to Borivali.
The journey will be completed in 12 minutes
The total journey from Thane to Borivali will be reduced by 12 km due to the Borivali-Thane link road. Even a journey of one and a half hours will be completed in just 12 minutes. The total length of the proposed 2+2 lane tunnel is 11.80 km. The diameter of the tunnel is 12.2 meters (2 tunnels, each with 2 lanes). Cross connection lanes will be built every 300 meters in the tunnel. Fire extinguishers/water hoses, smoke detectors, retro reflective/LED lights and sign boards will be installed in the tunnel. Out of the total length of 11.8 km of the tunnel, 8.76 km is in Thane district and 7.4 km in Borivali district.
Approval was given in the year 2015

In the MMRDA Authority meeting held on 7 July 2020, approval was given to transfer this project from MSRDC to Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. I had given it.
