Indian Railways has taken a major step toward strengthening security along the country’s borders. Traveling on reserved trains in the international border areas adjacent to Bangladesh and Nepal will no longer be as easy as before. The Railway Ministry has made identity card (ID) verification mandatory in these areas. This decision will directly impact passengers who attempt to travel on reserved tickets without valid identification.

What is the new Railway order?

The Railway Board issued a letter to all zonal railways on February 4, 2026, providing clear instructions. According to this, at least one passenger must show their original identity card while traveling in reserved class. If this is not done, the entire group will be considered traveling without a ticket and action will be taken as per the rules.

Which areas will be strictly enforced?

In a circular issued on February 6, 2026, the Railway Board clearly stated that these instructions should be strictly followed, especially in international border areas. This includes railway routes connecting the India-Nepal and India-Bangladesh borders. The Railways believes that this will prevent illegal travel, fake tickets, and security concerns.

Concession and quota tickets are also under scrutiny.

The Railways has also directed that passengers availing concessions or booking tickets under special quotas (such as senior citizens, students, etc.) must produce a valid document proving their eligibility. Failure to prove identity or eligibility could result in action.

Which IDs are valid during travel?

The Railways has already established a list of valid IDs for passengers. Passengers traveling on reserved tickets can carry one of the following original IDs:

Voter ID Card
Passport
PAN Card
Driving License
Photo ID issued by the Central or State Government
Student ID Card from a recognized school/college
Photo Passbook from a Nationalized Bank
Aadhaar Card

What precautions should passengers take?

Following this new Railway rule, passengers are being advised to carry their original ID before traveling. This is especially important for those traveling in border areas, as not having ID during checks could result in fines, ticket cancellation, or legal action.
