The Railway Minister said that for years, railway passengers have been carrying extra luggage with them. There is no new rule that now passengers will have to pay extra money if they carry more luggage than the limit. It was said in the report that the Prayagraj division of North Central Railway has prepared to impose charges on passengers for luggage exceeding the prescribed weight.
New Railway Rules: There was news that there is a plan to charge passengers for carrying more luggage than the prescribed weight while traveling by train. But Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has clarified the situation on this. Vaishnav has said that there is no plan to charge more fare from rail passengers on extra luggage like air passengers. Earlier reports had said that the Prayagraj division of North Central Railway has prepared to charge for luggage exceeding the prescribed weight for passengers. Also, like airports, preparations are being made to install luggage checking machines at every entry and exit point at railway stations and to check all types of luggage.
The report said that this is being done to ensure the safety of rail passengers and to curb the transportation of unwanted items like narcotics. But the Railway Minister has clearly said in an interview with a media house that the rule regarding how much weight passengers can carry during rail travel has been there for decades. For years, railway passengers have been carrying extra luggage with them. There is no new rule that now passengers will have to pay extra money if they carry more luggage than the limit.
There was a report of tagging luggage during rail travel as well
Earlier reports had said that on the lines of airports, tags will be put on luggage in case of rail travel as well. Also, passengers will be asked to book luggage above the prescribed weight at parcel rates. For example, luggage weighing up to 70 kg will be allowed in AC First Class. Luggage weighing more than this will be considered as parcel and a charge will be levied. Similarly, luggage weighing up to 50 kg for AC Second Class, 40 kg for AC Three and Sleeper Class and 30 kg for General Class will be allowed without any charge.
It was said in the report that this scheme will be implemented in a phased manner. In the first phase, it can be implemented at Prayagraj and Chheoki Junction of Prayagraj division by October-November. Later it will be implemented at the remaining stations.
