New Stations: Etihad Rail announced on Thursday seven new stations, bringing the total to 11, which will connect passengers across the UAE. The new stations — Al Sila, Al Dhannah, Al Mirfa, Madinat Zayed, Mezairaa, Al Faya, and Al Dhaid — form the complete passenger network, which is expected to begin operations this year.

The new stations are in addition to the previously announced ones in Mohammed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi, Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, University City in Sharjah, and the Al Hilal area in Fujairah.

A press release stated that these stations will open in phases and connect 11 cities and regions, creating the UAE’s first fully integrated national passenger rail system. Mohammed Alshehii, Chief Projects Officer at Etihad Rail said that station areas were “carefully selected” within key locations to serve population centres.

Azza AlSuwaidi, Deputy CEO, said: “The passenger rail network is a cornerstone of the UAE’s transport system, supporting development and connectivity. Building on our freight service since 2023, this milestone reflects partner collaboration and national talent, supported by global best practices. The new network is equipped with advanced technology and next-generation trains for reliable service.”

Business and economy classes

Earlier, it was announced that Etihad Rail trains will feature business and economy classes, offering a comfortable travel experience. The business class compartment will have 16 seats, while the economy class compartment will have 56 seats.

Train interiors will feature a contemporary design, full Wi-Fi connectivity, and power outlets at every seat. Services will run on a regular schedule, offering fast, efficient travel between cities and reducing road congestion.

Alshehhi said that 10 of the 13 trains have arrived, been tested, and certified to the highest international safety and quality standards. Each train can accommodate up to 400 passengers and will be operated using the latest systems.

7000 experts and workers

Alshehhi credited the project’s scale to a large, dedicated workforce. “This achievement is the result of three years of intensive planning, design, and delivery, with total working hours reaching 24.5 million and the involvement of more than 7,000 experts and workers,” he said.

In October last year, Etihad Rail signed a landmark joint venture with global passenger transport leader Keolis to operate the passenger rail service. At the time, Alistair Gordon, CEO of Keolis UK, Middle East and India, said that the company would run the trains and any connections, including buses, taxis, cars, and car parking, making it easier for people to move around the UAE. The company will train drivers and recruit staff, among other things.

The passenger rail network is expected to deliver national benefits by boosting tourism, mobility, emission reduction, and social and economic ties, making the UAE more connected and accessible.
