New System at New Delhi Railway Station: Only Ticketed Passengers Will Be Granted Entry to the Platform

To manage crowds at New Delhi Railway Station, only valid ticket holders will now be granted entry to the platforms. Turnstile gates are being installed on the lines of the Metro system, with a pilot project having commenced on Platform Number 9.

New Delhi. To facilitate crowd management at New Delhi Railway Station—much like at Metro stations—only passengers holding valid tickets will be permitted to access the platforms. To implement this, modern turnstile gates (designed to allow exit in one direction) are being installed. Additionally, other measures are being undertaken to ensure effective crowd management.

Holding Area to Accommodate 7,000 Passengers

Since the tragic stampede incident in February of last year—which claimed the lives of 18 people at New Delhi Railway Station—special emphasis has been placed on crowd management. To alleviate overcrowding on the platforms, a permanent holding area has been constructed on the Ajmeri Gate side of the station.

This facility has the capacity to seat over 7,000 passengers. It offers direct access to Platform Number 16 as well as other platforms. In line with these efforts, arrangements are now being put in place to restrict entry to the platforms exclusively to passengers holding valid tickets.

Passenger Movement to Become Safer

Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer for Northern Railway, states that the process of implementing an access control system and streamlining passenger movement at New Delhi Railway Station is currently underway.

This initiative includes the provision of separate, dedicated entry points for both reserved and unreserved passengers. Furthermore, turnstile gates are being installed at the exit points; a trial run for this system is currently being conducted at Gate Number 9 on the Ajmeri Gate side of New Delhi Railway Station.

Implementation at Other Railway Stations as Well

If the pilot project proves successful, it will be implemented at other railway stations as well. To enhance passenger convenience, ticket checking and queue management duties at the entry points are being handled by personnel from the Commercial and Railway Protection Force departments. Additionally, new signage is being installed to further facilitate passengers.
