Traveling on highways is no longer going to be the same as before. The long queues at toll plazas, intermittent delays, and the hassle of making payments every time—all of this is soon to become a thing of the past. The new system will be designed to allow your vehicle to move forward without stopping, with the toll amount being deducted automatically and digitally. Cameras will scan your license plate, and the payment will be debited directly from your account. In other words—no queues, no interruptions—just a smooth and rapid journey. In fact, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced that the government is preparing to implement this “barrier-free toll system” across several national highways in the country by December 2026—a move that is set to completely transform the entire travel experience. This initiative will make commuting faster, easier, and entirely hassle-free.
Barrier-Free Toll Systems to be Implemented on Highways
Speaking at the Logistics Power Summit and Awards 2026, Nitin Gadkari stated that robust infrastructure is essential for reducing logistics costs within the country. He revealed that the government is actively working on a plan to implement a barrier-free toll system on various national highways by December. This initiative is expected to save both time and—by eliminating long queues—the congestion typically associated with toll plazas. The new system will leverage modern technology, incorporating features such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and RFID-based FASTags. High-tech cameras will identify vehicle license plates, and the applicable toll charges will be automatically deducted via FASTag, meaning drivers will no longer need to stop at any point.
Adherence to Traffic Rules Mandatory; Non-Compliance Will Attract Fines
Gadkari further stated that those who fail to comply with traffic regulations will be issued e-notices. In the event of delayed payment, their FASTags may be suspended, and other penalties linked to the ‘VAHAN’ system could also be imposed. He emphasized that if India aspires to emerge as a global power, its logistics costs must be brought down to single-digit figures. According to a report compiled by IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, and IIM Bangalore, the development of expressways and economic corridors has successfully reduced India’s logistics costs from 16% to approximately 10%. Drawing a comparison, he noted that while these costs hover around 12% in the United States and Europe, they range between 8% and 10% in China.
87% of Oil Requirements Met Through Imports
Speaking at the summit, Gadkari highlighted that India fulfills 87% of its oil requirements through imports. Every year, fossil fuels worth approximately ₹22 lakh crore are procured from abroad—a practice that also contributes to rising pollution levels. To mitigate this, it is imperative that we actively promote the use of alternative fuels and biofuels. He asserted that Green Hydrogen represents the fuel of the future; however, to make it economically viable, the cost of establishing hydrogen fueling stations must be reduced.
Government Aims to Transform India into a $5 Trillion Economy
Gadkari remarked that India currently stands as the world’s fastest-growing major economy. The government’s overarching objective is to transform the nation into a $5 trillion economy—a goal in which a robust road network and reduced logistics costs are poised to play a pivotal role.
