MLFF Toll System for Highways: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has launched the new Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less toll system. The government says that this new system will eliminate the need for vehicles to stop at toll plazas. Let’s learn the details.
MLFF Toll System for Highways: The central government is rapidly working to modernize the toll collection system in the country. In this regard, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has launched the new Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less toll system. The government claims that this new system will eliminate the need for vehicles to stop at toll plazas, reducing travel time, saving fuel, and reducing pollution.
What is the MLFF toll system?
MLFF, or Multi Lane Free Flow, is a modern barrier-less tolling system. Vehicles can pass through toll plazas without stopping, and the toll will be automatically deducted. This system works with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and Fastag technology. Cameras will scan the vehicle’s number plate, and the toll amount will be automatically deducted from the Fastag account. This is expected to provide relief from long queues and traffic jams at toll plazas.
New system launched in Delhi and Gujarat
Recently, the country’s first MLFF system was launched at the Chorayasi toll plaza in Gujarat. Following this, the new system has now been implemented at the Mundka-Bakkarwala toll plaza in Delhi. According to the government, 17 more toll plazas are currently being converted to the MLFF system. In addition, tenders have been issued for 108 toll plazas in Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
According to Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, this new technology will save approximately ₹295 crore in fuel annually. It is also expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 81,000 tons. According to Gadkari, this system will also strengthen the logistics sector by reducing freight transportation time and making transportation faster and easier. The government expects to reduce the operational cost of toll collection to 3-4 percent in the coming years, compared to the current 12-15 percent.
Under this new system, it will be essential for vehicle owners to maintain a sufficient balance in their Fastag account. If the Fastag is unavailable or the annual pass is not activated, an e-notice will be sent to the vehicle owner. According to the government, the toll amount must be deposited within 72 hours of receiving the e-notice. Failure to do so could result in double the toll fee.
