PhonePe New Card: Digital payments and financial services platform PhonePe has launched a breakthrough card for daily commuters. The PhonePe RuPay On-the-Go Card is a National Public Transport Card (NCMC) that will work on all platforms, from metros to buses and trains. Most importantly, it doesn’t require internet access. This initiative is a major step towards India’s “One Nation, One Card” vision, which aims to digitize public transport payments across the country.
PhonePe’s ‘On-the-Go’ card is designed to simplify users’ daily commute and serves as an integrated transportation card. It allows for instantaneous transactions across all NCMC-enabled services, including metro, bus, train, toll, and parking. A key feature of this card is its instant issuance, enhancing convenience for millions of commuters. The card operates on a prepaid model, with funds stored directly in the card’s chip. This allows for payments even without an internet connection.
How much money can be stored on the card?
Users can deposit a maximum of ₹2,000 onto this card, while the maximum limit for a single non-internet payment is ₹500. Deep Agarwal, Head of Payments at PhonePe, said, “We are excited to introduce the PhonePe On-the-Go card, which aims to provide convenience to the millions of consumers who travel by public transport daily. This card offers instant tap and pay on transport services across the country.”
How will the card work without internet?
He stated that the card works even without internet, as payments are made from the card’s available balance. This is the first step towards integrating our digital wallet system with national public transport, providing a secure experience for every passenger and promoting national interoperability through the NCMC framework. The card is currently being rolled out with the Hyderabad Metro, implemented in partnership with L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited. In the future, it will be integrated with other transport service providers across the country.
Where can I buy the card?
People can purchase the PhonePe On-the-Go card at Hyderabad Metro ticket counters. After a one-time password verification of their phone number, the card will be issued by the Metro agent, and can be recharged via UPI, cash, or card. While this card is initially being issued in Hyderabad, it is fully interoperable. It can be used and recharged at all NCMC-enabled public transport hubs across the country, including cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru. In addition to the physical card, PhonePe also offers digital ticketing, passes, and smart card recharges through its app, providing a comprehensive digital experience for commuters.
