Postal Service Closed: The new year 2026 is set to bring a major change from the government. Recently, the Postal Department announced that, effective January 1, 2026, some international postal services will undergo significant changes. The primary reason for this change is to modernize the portal system, make it faster, more reliable, and more technologically advanced, to improve customer experience and provide services that meet changing global needs.

Why the Decision Was Taken

According to the Postal Department, this decision was taken in light of global practices and the directives of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). Many countries around the world are gradually phasing out outdated postal services that lack tracking or have long delivery times. Consequently, India has taken this step to provide its customers with a more secure and reliable option.

Changes will take place from January 1st

The biggest change is that the “Registered Small Packet Service” will be discontinued from January 1st, 2026. Under this service, small letters, whether sent by sea, SAL (Surface Air Lifted), or air, will no longer be sent. Surface Letter Mail and Surface Air Lifted (SAL) Letter Mail services will also be discontinued for letters going abroad.

The Ministry of Communications has stated that there are several reasons for the discontinuation of small packet services:

  • They have little or no tracking.
  • Delivery times are excessive.
  • Customs and security regulations have become stricter in many countries.
  • Many foreign postal agencies are not accepting such packets.

What is the reason behind the decision?

The government maintains that this change is solely aimed at improving the quality of services and will not reduce the options for customers or exporters. Instead, customers are being encouraged to use the International Tracked Packet Service (ITPS) and other international parcel services to ensure their goods are tracked and arrive safely and on time.

However, even after these changes, the registered service for documents will continue. This means that letters, postcards, printed paper, aerograms, blind literature, and M-Bag will be accepted as before.

The Postal Department also clarified that blind literature, i.e., literature sent to blind individuals or organizations, will not be subject to postal fees; only air charges will be applicable, subject to the regulations of the destination country. The M-Bag service will also continue, but the UPU regulations, such as weight limits and country-specific acceptance requirements, will remain in effect.

Who is this move specifically for?

The Postal Department stated that this move will benefit traders, MSMEs, exporters, and general consumers, as they will now have faster, safer, and trackable options available. This will make international communications and trade more seamless and transparent.
