Public Holiday: The Makar Sankranti holiday in the state has been changed. January 15th has been declared a public holiday instead of January 14th. The Principal Secretary has issued an order in this regard. According to the order, the holiday list issued on November 17, 2025, which had declared a restricted holiday on Wednesday, January 14th, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, has been amended.

Principal Secretary Issues Order

The Uttar Pradesh government has amended the holiday previously announced for the Makar Sankranti festival. The Principal Secretary has issued an order in this regard. In his order, he stated that after consideration, the government has decided that instead of the restricted holiday on January 14th, declared on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Thursday, January 15th, will be declared a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881. The order also states that Thursday, January 15th, will be a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881 on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.

Amendment to the Holiday Schedule for November 17, 2025

Principal Secretary SPS Ranga Rao stated that this order should be considered an amendment to the holiday schedule issued on November 17, 2025. He has informed all department heads in the state, the Allahabad High Court, the Accountant General, Allahabad, the Secretary, Government of India, Ministry of Finance, Life Insurance Corporation of India Building, Hazratganj, Lucknow, the General Manager, Reserve Bank of India, and the Secretariat, among others.

Makar Sankranti on January 14 or 15

The date of the Makar Sankranti festival used to be fixed, but this has also been changed. Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha of Magh month falls on January 14. According to tradition, eating rice is prohibited on Ekadashi. Bhagwatacharya Pandit Durga Shankar Dwivedi stated that there will be no donation of Khichdi on January 14. Therefore, Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on January 15. After discussion, the state government has also declared January 15 a holiday.

Banks, government offices, schools, and colleges will all be closed.

Following the Yogi government’s announcement, all schools, colleges, and government offices will remain closed. Banks and Life Insurance Corporation of India branches will also remain closed. Financial institutions have been informed of this. The Allahabad High Court has also been notified.
