Public Holiday: The Yogi Adityanath government of Uttar Pradesh has declared October 7 as a public holiday on the occasion of Maharishi Valmiki’s birth anniversary. The state’s Personnel Department issued an official order in this regard on Saturday. Valmiki Jayanti has been removed from the category of Restricted Holiday and declared a Public Holiday. The order states that October 7, 2025 (Tuesday) will now be a public holiday in the state on the occasion of Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti. Due to this, all government offices, educational institutions and departments of the state will remain completely closed.

Earlier, in the list of public holidays for the year 2025 released on 17 December 2024, Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti was included in the list of restricted holidays. Registered holidays mean that employees can choose certain holidays in the year as per their wish. The order also clarifies that this holiday will not be subject to the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881. This means that although it is a public holiday, it does not generally fall under the category of mandatory holidays for banks and financial institutions. A separate notification is issued by the Central Government for this. This will mainly be effective for offices, schools and departments under the State Government.

Maharishi Valmiki, the author of the Ramayana, is renowned as the Adi Kavi. Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated every year on the full moon day of the bright fortnight of the month of Ashwin. This year, the birth anniversary falls on October 7th. Uttar Pradesh has a large Valmiki community, and this holiday holds special significance for them. On this day, members of the community worship in temples, take out processions, and organize cultural programs.

This decision by the Yogi government is considered significant from both political and social perspectives. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently said at an event that Valmiki gave society the message of unity and harmony through the Ramayana. On his birth anniversary, we should all embrace his ideals. This statement clearly demonstrates the government’s active efforts to strengthen cultural heritage.
