Public Holiday: The Punjab government has declared a public holiday across the state on May 30, 2025 (Friday). This holiday has been declared on the occasion of Martyrdom Day of Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji. All government offices, schools, colleges and educational institutions will remain closed on this day. This decision has been issued through gazette notification.

Schools, colleges and government offices will remain closed on Martyrdom Day

According to the order issued from the Chief Secretariat of Punjab, there will be no work in all government departments, semi-government institutions, educational institutions and public offices of the state on May 30. This holiday will be applicable throughout the state of Punjab, and its purpose is to pay tribute to the sacrifice of Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji.A

Who was Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji?

Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji was the fifth Guru of Sikhism. He was born on 15 April 1563. He is considered the first martyr of Sikhism, who sacrificed his life to protect religious freedom and humanity. History has recorded that Mughal emperor Jahangir pressured Guru Sahib to accept Islam, but Guru Arjun Dev Ji fearlessly refused. After this, he was martyred in 1606 AD after being tortured horribly. His martyrdom inspired the Sikh community to stand with patience, courage, truth and against injustice, and gave the message of ‘the greatest service is sacrifice for religion’.

Recognition and celebration of Martyrdom Day

Every year, Guru Arjun Dev Ji’s Martyrdom Day is celebrated with great reverence and devotion. On this day, special Diwans are organized in Gurudwaras, programs like Akhand Paath, Kirtan, Langar Seva and Shabad Sankirtan are held. People show their service spirit by distributing cold water, shikanji and chhabeel in summer. This day has become a symbol of sacrifice, service and determination.
