Indian Railways: Millions of people travel daily on the Indian Railways, the world’s fourth-largest rail network. Demand for train seats is so high that obtaining a confirmed ticket is challenging. For passenger convenience, the Railways has been making changes from time to time. Recently, the Railways has taken a major step to prevent ticket fraud. The Railways has changed ticket booking rules. Without knowledge of the new rules, you will not be able to book tickets from October 1st.
Train ticket booking rules changed from October 1st.
Indian Railways has changed the ticket booking rules effective October 1, 2025. Under the new rules, IRCTC has made a major change to online general ticket booking. Starting October 1, Aadhaar authentication will be mandatory for ticket booking. This means you won’t be able to book train tickets without an Aadhaar card. Whether you book tickets online through the IRCTC website or the app, you’ll need to authenticate. The rules, which were applicable to Tatkal tickets from July 15, will now also apply to general tickets from October 1. General means tickets from Sleeper to First AC.
A special 15-minute window.
The Railways is trying to increase passengers’ chances of getting confirmed tickets, so it’s crucial to link their IRCTC IDs with Aadhaar. Only users whose IRCTC IDs are linked to Aadhaar will benefit from the window opening 15 minutes before the online booking window opens.
These people are exempt.
Indian Railways has only made any changes to the rules for booking general reserved tickets at computerized PRS counters. This means you will continue to book tickets at the ticket counters as you did before. This means that these changes are only applicable to online ticket booking.
Railways changed these rules
The Railways has changed the rules not only for the 15-minute window but also for booking Tatkal tickets. Linking your IRCTC ID with Aadhaar is mandatory for booking Tatkal tickets. Starting July 1, 2025, Indian Railways has made Aadhaar authentication mandatory for booking Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC website or app.
Bookings will not be possible without an OTP.
To prevent arbitrariness and fraudulent activities by ticket booking agents, the Railways has made an OTP linked to your Aadhaar number mandatory for online Tatkal bookings from July 15th. During booking, you will receive an OTP on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number, which must be entered. Ticket booking will not be possible without the OTP.
How to link with Aadhaar
Log in to IRCTC. Go to My Account and select the option “Link Your Aadhaar” or “Aadhaar KYC.” Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number in the box and click the “Send OTP” button. An OTP will be sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Entering this OTP will automatically link your Aadhaar to IRCTC.
