Indian Railways runs a campaign against those carrying extra luggage in trains and also collects revenue in the form of penalty from such passengers. Railways has fixed the weight of luggage separately for each category.
If you are traveling in AC first class, then a passenger can carry luggage up to 70 kg. With this there is a discount of 15 kg. Apart from this, after making a maximum booking, 65 kg luggage can be carried in the parcel van.
Similarly, in second AC, there is a discount of 10 kg along with 50 kg and after booking 30 kg, additional parcel can be taken by van. There is a concession of 10 kg in third AC or AC chair car with 40 kg luggage. You can take 30 kg along with you by booking in the parcel van.
In sleeper class, there is allowance to carry 10 kg more luggage along with 40 kg. You can carry additional 70 kg luggage after booking. In the second class, along with 35 kg, by booking 10 kg more, an additional 60 kg can be carried in the luggage parcel van.
This is how fine is imposed on excess luggage
According to the new guidelines of Indian Railways, if a passenger is caught carrying unbooked luggage in excess of the prescribed limit, he will have to pay six times the amount of the booked luggage. For example, a passenger traveling 500 kilometers with 40 kg extra luggage can book it in the luggage van by paying Rs 109. If the passenger does not book, he will have to pay a fine of Rs 654.
